What is slump/flow testing?
Flow testing of liquid screed is carried out to determine the flowability / slump of the screed. To do this, a stainless-steel flow cone (slump cone) is placed on the flow plate. The cone is then filled with screed. Once full, the cone is removed, and the spread / slump is measured to determine the flowability of the liquid screed before application.
How do I know if the correct slump has been reached?
The slump measurements are marked on the flow plate to allow material testing to be completed to BS8204-7:2003. The material must slump beyond the first ring, showing that it has a viscosity low enough for flowing on site, but not beyond the second ring.
Why is flow testing necessary?
Flow testing ensures the screed has the correct consistency and is workable, and helps avoid drying shrinkage or any related problems. A mixture that’s too wet risks creating a non-uniform composition with coarse aggregates settling at the bottom, while a mixture that’s too dry will result in the screed being difficult to handle and place correctly.
