What is slump/flow testing?

Flow testing of liquid screed is carried out to determine the flowability / slump of the screed. To do this, a stainless-steel flow cone (slump cone) is placed on the flow plate. The cone is then filled with screed. Once full, the cone is removed, and the spread / slump is measured to determine the flowability of the liquid screed before application.

How do I know if the correct slump has been reached?

The slump measurements are marked on the flow plate to allow material testing to be completed to BS8204-7:2003. The material must slump beyond the first ring, showing that it has a viscosity low enough for flowing on site, but not beyond the second ring.

Why is flow testing necessary?

Flow testing ensures the screed has the correct consistency and is workable, and helps avoid drying shrinkage or any related problems. A mixture that’s too wet risks creating a non-uniform composition with coarse aggregates settling at the bottom, while a mixture that’s too dry will result in the screed being difficult to handle and place correctly.

Liquid Screed Flow Test Kit

Accurate On-Site Consistency Testing

The Metex Liquid Screed Flow Test Kit is designed to accurately measure the flow consistency of liquid screed before pouring. Supplied complete with flow cone and plate, this professional kit allows installers to quickly verify that screed is mixed to the correct specification on site.

Correct flow testing is essential when working with anhydrite and cement-based liquid screeds. Using a reliable liquid screed flow test kit helps ensure the material achieves the proper flowability or slump, improving surface finish, strength, and overall floor performance. It also supports quality control procedures and helps demonstrate compliance with manufacturer guidelines.

The test process is simple and efficient. The flow cone (AKA slump cone) is placed on the flow plate, filled with screed, and lifted to allow the material to spread naturally. The resulting diameter or slump is then measured to confirm the screed meets the required flow range. This quick check ensures that the screed is workable and has the correct consistency. It also helps avoid drying shrinkage, handling and levelling difficulties, and unnecessary remedial work. Testing for flowability ensures that quality is never compromised and guarantees a high performance, free flowing, self-compacting liquid screed.

Manufactured for durability and repeat site use, the Metex screed slump kit is suitable for screeding contractors, underfloor heating installers, and flooring specialists working on residential and commercial projects.

For both routine quality checks and meeting specification requirements, the Metex liquid screed flow test kit provides a straightforward and dependable solution for maintaining material consistency on every screed pour.
