What are expansion joints used for?

Floor expansion joints are used to protect the floor from cracks due to the temperature-related expansion and contraction caused by underfloor heating. Expansion joints allow movement within the screed, preventing cracks in undesirable locations.

Can the expansion joints be trimmed to length?

Yes, they can be cut to length using a fine tooth saw or stanley knife

What height is the expansion joint?

These are a fixed height of 80mm (3″)

Do I need adhesive to install them?

No need – the Metex flexible expansion joint is supplied with a pre applied self adhesive backing strip for quick installation.

Where should I install expansion joints?

Expansion joints should be positioned in places where the screed undergoes high levels of movement and stress. Areas that are especially prone to stress and movement are places where smaller areas of screed are in contact with larger areas, such as T-shaped or L-shaped rooms. Expansion strips should also be used where UFH pipe passes through doorways. This is particularly important for sand & cement screeds and liquid anhydrite.
