FAQs about Metex Finishing Tools

How do you remove old silicone sealant without damaging the surface?

Old silicone sealant is best removed with a dedicated silicone cutter, which slices the sealant away cleanly without scraping or scratching the surface underneath. Run the silicone scraper along the joint to lift the bulk of the old bead, then clean off any remaining traces before resealing. The Metex Silicone Cutter is 21mm wide, so it fits behind taps and around fittings, and works on baths, showers, sinks, worktops and window frames.

How do you get a smooth finish on silicone sealant?

A silicone finishing tool like the Metex Silicone Block gives a smoother and more consistent bead than finishing by finger. After applying the sealant, draw the shaped edge of the tool along the joint in one steady pass to form the bead and remove the excess. Spraying the silicone smoothing tool with soapy water or glass cleaner first stops the sealant sticking. Metex Silicone Block also glides over tile grout lines, so the bead doesn’t dip at each joint.

What is the difference between the Metex Silicone Block and Silicone Block Pro?

The original Silicone Block forms 6mm and 8mm beads, while the Silicone Block Pro forms smaller 4mm and 6mm beads for a slimmer, more modern finish. The Pro is also narrower at 25mm wide, compared with 30mm for the original Silicone Block, and its new corner design shapes both vertical and horizontal joints, making 3-way internal corners easier to finish. Both work with silicone, hybrid and caulk sealants.

How do you remove grout without power tools?

Grout can be removed by hand with a grout rake that has an abrasive blade, which wears the grout away without chipping the surrounding tiles. The Metex Grout Removal Tool has a long 165mm blade that covers more of the joint with each stroke, and it removes a set depth of grout so you don’t dig in too far. The blade can be switched to the side of the tool to reach corner joints, and replacement blades are available.

Can you use solvent cleaners with silicone finishing tools?

No, solvent cleaners should not come into contact with Metex silicone finishing tools, as they can damage the Silicon Block material. Solvents like Multisolve can still be used to remove traces of old silicone before resealing, as long as the surface is left clean and dry with no residue. Solvents should also be kept away from freshly applied silicone sealant. To clean a silicone finishing tool, wipe it straight after use, and pick off any sealant that has set.
